The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) became the second transit agency this week to pick a name for its up-and-coming service. Yesterday, UTA announced its commuter-rail system will be named FrontRunner.

“The name will become synonymous with speed, reliability and movement,” said UTA General Manager John Inglish in a prepared statement.

The name also reflects Utah’s Wasatch Front, a 120-mile-long urban area that encompasses three metropolitan areas — Ogden-Clearfield, Salt Lake City and Provo-Orem.

Scheduled to open in early 2008, the 44-mile Weber County-to-Salt Lake City commuter-rail line will include nine stations.

On Monday, the Charlotte Area Transit System announced its light-rail system will be named LYNX.
