VIA Rail announces mandatory vaccination policy for riders

In accordance with Transport Canada policy, VIA Rail Canada now requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all passengers 12 years of age and older.
The policy took effect Oct. 30. The first month of the mandate will give riders time to get their vaccine by only requiring a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of travel time.
As of Nov. 30, all passengers must be fully vaccinated and negative tests will no longer be accepted by that time. The agency has also mandated vaccination for its employees; those who have not at least received their first dose by Nov. 15 will be put on administrative leave.
Masks will still be required on VIA Rail trains and in stations regardless of vaccination status, and each passenger must also complete a pre-boarding health check.
"Protecting the health and safety of our people, our passengers and the public is more than just a main priority - it is a core value deeply rooted in VIA Rail's culture and a responsibility that we all share," said President and CEO Cynthia Garneau in a press release.
