VIA Rail celebrates Cobourg Station improvements

VIA Rail, federal and local officials late last week opened a new overhead walkway and central platform at Cobourg Station in Ontario.

The new walkway was created to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. During the past few years, the Cobourg Station has been the site of a major construction project designed to improve accessibility, security, and safety and travel experience for passengers, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.

"This new walkway will respond to increased demand for, and ridership on, our trains," said VIA Rail Chair Paul Smith.

The $14 million (in Canadian dollars) project was funded in part through the government program to invest $1 billion in VIA Rail. About $1 million was funded through Canada's Economic Action Plan.
