VIA Rail completes upgrades to Windsor, Belleville and Oshawa stations
advertisement
VIA Rail Canada Inc. recently completed a series of improvements to its Windsor, Belleville and Oshawa stations under a billion-dollar revitalization program funded through the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Upgrades to the three stations included new exterior masonry work, new roofing, improved platforms, expanded passenger lounges, more energy-efficient lighting and better customer service areas.
For example, the Windsor station now can seat more than 100 passengers. The station also was made fully accessible and more energy efficient.
The Belleville station is fully accessible and more energy efficient, as well. The new facility was built next to the old station, which was built in 1856 and was no longer large enough to accommodate the growing number of passengers, according to VIA Rail. A new overhead walkway leads to an island platform that will enable VIA Rail to accommodate more trains.
The Oshawa station also now features a new overhead walkway and island platform. VIA Rail has now begun triple-track work in Oshawa that will reduce train delays, and enable the railroad to operate more trains in the area.
