VIA Rail Canada last week issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) to pre-qualify interested general contractors for a construction project to upgrade VIA Rail’s rail maintenance facilities in Montreal and Toronto.

The project calls for construction of new maintenance facilities and upgrading existing ones to accommodate a future fleet of 32 Siemens train sets to be delivered in 2022, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.

Work would include new construction and upgrades of the rail yard, civil engineering systems, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical systems, communication systems and refueling equipment. The contractor also would supply and install vehicle maintenance equipment for the facilities.

Submissions are due March 31.

In summer 2020, a request for proposals will be released to the contractors who are on the short list that results from this RFQ.

The project is part of the Quebec City–Windsor corridor fleet replacement program funded by the Canadian government.
