VIA Rail Canada Inc. served 1.13 million passengers in the second quarter, marking a 10 percent increase over the same period a year ago.The Canadian passenger railroad's revenue increased 8.4 percent to CA$87.8 million compared with the same quarter last year, according to VIA Rail's second-quarter report.Ridership was highest along the Quebec City-Windsor corridor, which served 1.079 million passengers and logged revenue of CA$68.4 million, representing 11.5 percent and 13.6 percent increases, respectively.The second quarter marked the 17th consecutive quarter of revenue growth and 10th consecutive quarter of ridership increases, said VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Yves Desjardins-Siciliano in a press release."Canadians in record numbers are demonstrating their preference for train travel and taking advantage of the easy, enjoyable and sustainable experience that VIA Rail offers," he said.As the railroad marks its 40th anniversary this year, VIA Rail leaders are seeking to improve the rider experience, such as by awarding contracts to Bombardier and Cad Railway Industries to refurbish Heritage Fleet rail cars.And in June, the railroad announced the short list of potential manufacturers of a new fleet of trains for the Quebec City-Windsor corridor.
