After a more than 18-month hiatus, passenger-rail service will resume in northern Manitoba early next month.
VIA Rail Canada Inc. on Monday announced service between Gillam and Churchill, Manitoba, will start up again on Dec. 2, with trains traveling in both directions.
Service on the Gillam-Churchill route was suspended in May 2017 due to major flooding that severely damaged track. Following repairs and inspections, Arctic Gateway Group — the infrastructure’s owner — confirmed that the track is now safe for passenger operations, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.
"We understand the major inconveniences the interruption of this essential service may have caused the people living along the Winnipeg-Churchill route, and specially the town of Churchill," said VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Yves Desjardins-Siciliano. "The restoration of service will enable [us] to continue to honor our commitment to remote communities, and enable those in northern Manitoba to hopefully return to a more normal life by being better connected, especially with the holiday season right around the corner."
