VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) is moving forward with a service resumption plan in the Quebec City-Windsor corridor by adding 63 weekly frequencies on July 12, boosting service levels on the route from 38% to 54%.

"While we continue to closely follow the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and to collaborate with public health authorities and federal and provincial governments, we are encouraged by the progress made regarding the reopening plans and by the increasing demand for our services," said VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer Cynthia Garneau in a press release. "We look forward to fully resuming all our operations throughout our network when conditions will allow it."

As provincial reopening plans progress, VIA Rail also has started to increase onboard capacity while continuing to employ various health and safety measures.

Those actions include limiting the number of available seats; deploying strict sanitary measure protocols on trains and in stations, maintenance centers, call centers and offices; and requiring masks at all times both in stations and onboard trains.
