VIA Rail to replace station in Ontario town

Yesterday, VIA Rail Canada Inc. announced plans to build a station in Cobourg, Ontario, to replace a historic station built in 1911.
To finance the project, the railroad will use $6.5 million in capital funding recently received from the Canadian government and more than $900,000 from the federal Economic Action Plan.
VIA Rail currently is studying design options; a final design will be selected later this year. The railroad also is working with the town of Cobourg on a plan to preserve and reuse the existing station, which no longer can accommodate riders during peak travel periods.
As part of a previously announced $278 million Kingston Subdivision improvement project, VIA Rail plans to add one mainline and a second platform in Cobourg — work that couldn’t be completed in conjunction with the existing station, VIA Rail officials said in a prepared statement.
