VIA Rail Canada April 5 announced plans to continue operating passenger rail service on operating partner E&N Railway’s line on Vancouver Island beyond April 15, as long as the RailAmerica Inc. subsidiary short line provides access, according to terms of the Train Services agreement in effect prior to March 15.
VIA also stated that it would not participate in funding the Vancouver Island Rail Development Initiative — which it isn’t mandated to do.
Officials at VIA stated that the company reached its decision following "full and frank discussions with community groups, government and the E&N Railway, according to a statement prepared April 5. For now, VIA is awaiting confirmation from E&N on its operating plans beyond April 15.
