VRE boosts ridership in FY09's first quarter

Improved on-time performance, 61 additional rail cars and upgraded freight-rail infrastructure helped the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) register ridership growth in fiscal-year 2009's first quarter, which ended Sept. 30.

Between July and September, the agency carried 998,329 passengers, up 12.9 percent compared with first-quarter FY2008. Seven of the agency's 10 highest ridership days were recorded in September.
