VRE cuts fare increase in half
advertisement
The bad news for Virginia Railway Express (VRE) riders: The agency still plans to implement a fare increase in January. The good news: It won't be nearly as high as originally projected.
The agency had proposed raising fares 15 percent in January. However, declining fuel costs are projected to reduce VRE's FY2009 budget by $200,000 and higher-than-expected ridership has helped the agency generate additional revenue. So, VRE has reduced the fare increase to 7 percent.
The agency also will "make every attempt to keep service at its current level," according to a prepared statement.
