Rail News: Passenger Rail
Virginia Railway Express (VRE) recently proposed raising fares 6 percent on July 1 to help cover increasing costs.
The agency will need to increase its operating budget $3.3 million in fiscal-year 2007 because of higher fuel, maintenance and insurance costs, and Amtrak track-usage fees.
The fare hike would generate an additional $1.4 million in ticket revenue. The agency also plans to request a $1.9 million subsidy increase from local jurisdictions.
