The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) on Tuesday opened a new third track between Hamilton and Spotsylvania County, Va.

The new track is aimed at increasing capacity and fluidity while also providing operational flexibility on CSX's rail line, which hosts VRE, Amtrak and CSX trains.

A combination of federal, state and local funding paid for the project. CSX also made a contribution, VRE officials said in a press release.

The project was completed in conjunction with the recently opened Spotsylvania Station and also included an upgrade to a grade crossing at Mine Road.
