The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has obtained a $300,600 grant to install tire derived aggregate (TDA) along sections of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Transit rail project.
TDA is a vibration-reducing material derived from scrap vehicle tires, VTA officials said in a news release. About 4,200 tons of TDA will be installed beneath the tracks in four locations along the BART Silicon Valley corridor.
Workers will place a one-foot layer of shredded tires beneath the track foundation where BART rails will eventually be installed.
The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle awarded the grant.
