Valley Metro holds hearings on proposed fare increases

Valley Metro officials are soliciting public opinion during November and December hearings on a proposal to increase fares for light-rail and bus services.
The proposal calls for raising a one-ride fare from $1.75 to $2 and the all-day pass from $3.50 to $4. A 31-day pass would go up from $55 to $64, and the Express 31-day pass would jump from $85 to $96.
“Asking riders to consider paying a higher fare for transit is never easy,” said Valley Metro Executive Director Dave Boggs in a prepared statement. “We know that transit service is important and that riders are willing to pay a little more to keep the service they need.”
The agency plans to recover at least 25 percent of transit costs from fares, officials said. Currently, riders pay about 23 percent of the cost to ride light-rail trains or buses.
If approved, the fare changes could take effect in July 2012.
