Valley Metro has been recognized for its use of geographic information system (GIS) technology in its ridership data portal.

GIS supplier Esri presented the agency with a 2017 special achievement in GIS award for the portal, which provides access to customized transit ridership reports. The data portal serves as a "model for the industry," Valley Metro officials said in a press release.

Meanwhile, the agency's Northwest light-rail extension received the 2017 Public Works Project of the Year in transportation from the American Public Works Association's Arizona Chapter. The first phase of the extension opened March 2016.

The award recognizes the alliance between a managing agency, a consultant/architect/engineer and a contractor, according to APWA's website.
