Valley Metro last week completed streetcar track installation on Mill Avenue between University Drive and Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, Arizona, marking the installation of nearly half of the streetcar’s track in the city.

The Tempe Streetcar is scheduled to open in 2021 with 3 miles of track, 14 stops and two connections to Valley Metro’s rail service, agency officials said in a press release.

To date, crews have installed 37,000 feet of electrical conduit and more than 27,000 linear feet of rail.

The downtown Mill Avenue section of the track was one of the most challenging portions of the project, said Andy Auxier, project manager with construction contractor Stacy and Witbeck Inc., in a press release.

Crews worked six days a week from May 13 to Aug. 15 to finish the job on time. They often pulled double shifts in order to have the least impact on Arizona State University students in the area, officials said.

Crews will return next summer to install streetcar stops.
