Light rail in Phoenix has spurred billions of dollars worth of capital investments along the system's tracks since the service was launched 10 years ago, Valley Metro officials announced last week.

Over the past decade, there has been $11 billion of investments made and 35,000 jobs created within a half mile of the light-rail system's 26-mile corridor, according to Valley Metro's recently released "Quality of Life" impact report.

"Since light rail opened, we've transformed from a quiet downtown into a bustling hot spot for innovation, education and business," said Phoenix Mayor and Valley Metro Rail Board Chair Thelda Williams, who helped mark the system's 10th anniversary during a celebration last week.

The system's initial 20 miles of light rail opened Dec. 27, 2008. Currently, more than 50,000 riders rely on light rail each day, according to the report. In 2017, the system logged 16.5 million riders.

Valley Metro provides public transit options to greater Phoenix and Maricopa County, Arizona. Seven high-capacity transit extensions are under construction that will create a 66-mile system by 2034.
