Valley Metro opens new light-rail station

Today, Valley Metro will open the 50th Street/Washington Station, marking the first new station built along its existing light-rail line in Phoenix.
The $23 million station provides access to an Ability360 facility — which serves people with disabilities — and the neighboring business community, Valley Metro officials said in an announcement. It also will support transit-oriented development that’s planned for the area, they added.
The station features wider platforms and sidewalks, a ticket vending machine canopy and various pieces of art. Construction on the facility began in 2017.
The station is the first light-rail project completed under Phoenix Transportation 2050, a long-range plan aimed at advancing the city’s transportation infrastructure.
"Four years ago, Phoenix voters from all corners of the city made the choice to expand and enhance our community investment in a total transportation plan," said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. "Ability360 [is] one of our state's largest and most comprehensive disability resources centers, [and this station] sends a message that Phoenix values inclusivity; that we want everyone to feel welcome riding on our rail."
