Valley Metro light-rail ridership in Phoenix reached a record 1.2 million riders in September, the highest level in the system’s three-year history, Valley Metro officials said in a prepared statement.
So far in 2011, ridership is outpacing records set in 2010 by an average of more than 4 percent, they said.
“When you give residents effective mobility choices and connections to life, they will ride,” said Valley Metro Chief Executive Officer Steve Banta.
The agency set its highest daily ridership record at 60,437 on Sept. 9, primarily a result of more weekday commuters and special events, Valley Metro officials said. The agency averaged 47,818 riders per weekday in September.
