Valley Metro’s annual transit ridership increased 5.1 percent in fiscal-year 2012.
Boardings on the Phoenix agency’s light-rail and bus services totaled 71 million during the year, which ended June 30. Light-rail ridership was the highest recorded at more than 13.5 million annual boardings, Valley Metro officials said in a prepared statement.
“As the economy moves in a positive direction and new jobs are generated, there is an upswing in public transit use,” said Chief Executive Officer Steve Banta. “We appreciate that there is a greater interest in taking public transit because of its convenience and value.”
People are using transit services to go to work and school, and riding light-rail trains to community and sporting events, which contributed to record ridership, Valley Metro officials said. For example, light-rail boardings reached 62,227 on April 6, the day of the Arizona Diamondbacks home opener in Phoenix, compared with a typical average daily ridership of 42,000.
