Valley Metro yesterday began testing streetcar vehicles in Tempe, Arizona.
Over the next weeks and months, Valley Metro vehicles will be on the alignment completing a variety of systems, signals and safety tests, agency officials said in a press release.
Testing the new system includes checking the vehicle clearance at stations, as well as integration with the traffic signals and the overhead electrification system, according to a Valley Metro news release.
“We are excited for these final steps in the Tempe Streetcar project,” said Valley Metro Rail Board Member Robin Arredondo-Savage.
Earlier this month, Valley Metro received a $17.4 million allocation of federal American Rescue Plan funding for the 3-mile streetcar line. When completed, the route will have 14 stations and six vehicles that will connect downtown Tempe, Arizona State University and the emergency employment corridor of Rio Salado Parkway.
