Vancouver Island Railway to receive federal funds for upgrades

Canadian government officials reaffirmed plans to fund repairs to the Vancouver Island Railway, which has suspended passenger-rail service due to unsafe track conditions.
The government set aside up to $7.5 million (in Canadian dollars) in 2012 for restoration work under the Building Canada Fund’s major infrastructure component. The federal funding for the Vancouver Railway project is conditional on federal project review, as well as confirmation from the Island Corridor Foundation that no additional federal dollars will be required, government officials said in a press release.
Also, the province of British Columbia will provide $7 million, in addition to $500,000 for an engineering study.
The project's total cost is $15 million.
