The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority last week announced an all-time ridership record was reached in September, surpassing the previous record set in August 2019.
During the month, 105,689 riders traveled on the authority's network, 9% higher than the previous ridership record of 96,942 logged in August 2019. VPRA operates four Amtrak routes that connect with Northeast Corridor service.
September 2022 was also up 37.6% from 76,793 riders in pre-pandemic September 2019. Compared to the same period in 2021, ridership jumped 108%, showing a strong rebound in post-pandemic travel, VPRA officials said in a press release.
Every VPRA route saw an increase in ridership; Route 50 Norfolk posted the highest ridership gains. It carried 37,609 people in September, up 46.2% from the same period in 2019, and up 137.3% from the same period in 2021, officials said.
"We are encouraged by our consistently strong ridership numbers, and will work closely with Amtrak and our other partners to ensure our service is consistent, safe and on time," said VPRA Executive Director DJ Stadtler.
