advertisement

Japanese car builder Nippon Sharyon contracted Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. to supply 116 SE-377 final drives for double-deck cars under order to Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra).

The agency is replacing 165 of its Highliner cars, which operate between Randolph Street Station and University Park in Chicago.

Featuring a single housing and separate coupler design, the drives include an interface between the axle shaft and bogie. Voith will assemble the wheels, bearings, couplers, labyrinths and gear couplings at its York, Pa., facility.

By 2006’s end, 26 Highliner cars will be in service.
