Yesterday, the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) approved Forest City Enterprises and Urban Atlantic Development to lead a development team that will create a transit-oriented development (TOD) project around the New Carrollton Metrorail station in Prince George’s County.

WMATA also approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the team, the first step in a joint approval process with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), which is expected to approve the team selection and MOU in early April, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.

WMATA and MDOT combined properties to make 39 acres available for redevelopment around New Carrollton in a joint request for qualifications in September 2010. Forest City and Urban Atlantic were selected based in part on their experience with TOD and public/private partnership projects, said Steve Goldin, WMATA’s director of real estate.

After MDOT approves the MOU and team selection, the agencies will select consultants to create a conceptual development plan. The agreement also calls for a MDOT to provide $350,000 for predevelopment planning and WMATA to reimburse the development team for up to $650,000 of consultant costs to support station development planning.
