In fiscal-year 2003, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recorded the highest-ever Metrorail ridership total in the authority’s 27-year history. WMATA made 184.4 million passenger trips — a 2.1 percent increase compared with FY 2002.
WMATA has increased Metrorail ridership during the past seven years.
Meanwhile, Metrobus ridership recorded its second-highest annual ridership at 147.8 million trips, a .5 percent increase compared with FY 2002.
WMATA set the records despite the sluggish economy and harsh winter, which caused some service disruptions, authority officials said in a prepared statement.
