WMATA begins Silver Line simulation trains

Yesterday, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) began six days of simulated service on the new Silver Line to familiarize employees with the system and to finalize train schedules in preparation for the line's July 26 opening.

Simulation trains are operating between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center stations at all hours that the Metrorail system is open. They are running every six minutes during rush hours and every 12 to 20 minutes during off-peak times, WMATA officials said in a press release.

Passenger service is scheduled to begin officially at noon on July 26. When the line opens, WMATA will be operating more trains and rail cars than at any point in its history, agency officials said.

The Silver Line will result in more frequent midday and evening service at 23 stations, from East Falls Church to Largo Town Center, and more frequent weekend service for 40 percent of riders, they said.
