The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) yesterday began a project to modernize 27 elevators across more than a dozen of its rail stations, starting with the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station.

Each elevator rehabilitation is anticipated to take up to 3.5 months to complete. Elevators will be out of service during this time, WMATA officials said in a press release.

The rehabilitation project will take about four years to complete, and is part of WMATA’s regular elevator maintenance program, which includes maintenance for over 350 elevators across the WMATA system every 10 to 15 years. All major components in the elevators will be replaced or upgraded, including the passenger cabs, controls, motors and safety devices, WMATA officials said.
