After receiving board approval March 15, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), beginning July 1, will extend health benefits to domestic partners of eligible employees.


WMATA plans to extend its health, dental and vision benefits, continue an open-enrollment period, and allow employees to care for a domestic partner under a benefit policy similar to the Family and Medical Leave Act.


"Other companies and governments are doing this, and we have to be in a position to recruit and train qualified employees," said Chairman Decatur Trotter in a prepared statement. "This policy change will allow us to do so."


WMATA also plans to revise its Family and Medical Leave Act policy to reflect the change, and develop a separate domestic partner benefits policy.
