WMATA board selects route to Dulles

On Nov. 21, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board members selected a locally preferred alternative (LPA) to extend service into Washington Dulles International Airport.

The LPA is part of the Dulles Corridor Rapid Transit draft environmental impact statement (EIS) process. The chosen alternative would expand Metrorail through Tysons Corner, and into Dulles Airport and eastern Loudoun County, Va.

The $3.14 billion LPA includes 11 stations, a rail yard site on Dulles Airport property, additional storage tracks and a yard connection to the existing West Fall Church Rail Yard.

Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board plans to act on the LPA in December, at which time Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation would seek Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approval to begin preliminary engineering and the final EIS process.

During this time, agencies and local communities plan to address outstanding issues related to facility design, cost, potential effects and mitigation measures. WMATA officials expect the final EIS to be completed and submitted to FTA in late spring 2003.
