WMATA creates anti-terrorism team

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) police department recently formed an anti-terrorism team to increase surveillance of the agency’s system, conduct more frequent security sweeps of facilities and tunnels, inspect trains and stations, and increase uniformed officers’ visibility.
WMATA used proceeds from a $9.56 million U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant to create the 20-member team last month. The grant also will help fund training and equipment.
The team will perform “unpredictable patrols” of trains, stations, buses and facilities to boost security, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement. The unit also will respond to calls related to suspicious packages or threats, enhance cooperation and information sharing with federal and local law enforcement agencies, and implement new technology to prevent and identify terrorism threats.
