WMATA employees gain understanding of police tactics

Some Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) employees have a newfound appreciation for transit police following a recent police academy program offered to agency workers.

Held during the lunch hour, the week-long program covered topics such as explosive-ordinance detection, K-9 dogs, pickpockets, identity theft, firearms, self defense and police drill instruction.

"Individuals who participated in the police academy spent only a few hours with us, and in doing so they gained an appreciation for a few of the challenges that we face on a daily basis," said Police Chief Polly Hanson in a prepared statement.
