Starting today, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is increasing service frequency on the Red Line.

Red Line trains will operate every eight minutes during peak morning and evening hours, with 10-minute frequency at off-peak times, WMATA officials said in a press release.

The Red Line service improvements are part of the overall effort to restore standard rail service following pandemic-era service reductions and the 7000-series rail-car shortage that occurred last year. The agency recently obtained approval to begin adding 7000-series cars — which make up the majority of its fleet — back to service.

Gradual service upgrades are expected throughout the winter and into spring, WMATA officials said. The agency is also struggling with a shortage of rail operators that is making a return to normal service difficult, they added.
