WMATA installs final 'Guarded 8' rail switch

On Monday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) completed a key recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) when the agency completed the “Guarded 8” project by installing the 178th mainline guarded rail switch.
The new switch was installed outside the Prince George Plaza Station on the Green Line.
The so-called “Guarded 8s” are guarded rails designed to permit trains to move between tracks in a way that decreases the risk of a derailment. The NTSB recommended in 2007 that the agency install the switches to improve safety.
The federal government and local jurisdictions funded the $57 million project, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.
