Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority safety officials Nov. 1 confirmed that all 17 samples taken last week from the agency’s mail and adjoining ID rooms tested negative for the presence of anthrax.



"That is obviously good news for our mailroom employees, as well as our employees and customers who visit the ID card office," said WMATA Chief Safety Officer Fred Goodine in a prepared statement, adding that the 14 employees who work in the offices also tested negative for anthrax exposure.



The offices closed Oct. 23 after WMATA officials learned that two Brentwood postal employees had died of anthrax the day before. All mail sent to WMATA’s Jackson Graham Building headquarters, which houses the mail and ID rooms, is processed through the Brentwood facility. The offices reopened Nov. 1.
