WMATA obtains federal grant to participate in FBI program
advertisement
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced it recently received a $351,000 Urban Area Security Initiative grant that will enable the agency to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Electronic Countermeasures system.
The grant will fund the necessary equipment maintenance contracts and training for a system designed to jam radio signals for remote-controlled, improvised explosive devices. Members of the Metro Transit Police Department’s bomb squad will be trained to use the system.
The grant will cover two complete systems, including two vehicles, a vehicle-mounted jammer and portable jammer, and two integration kits.
WMATA’s Finance and Administration Committee has authorized the agency to award a contract to purchase and install equipment to support the electronic countermeasures system.
