Yesterday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) opened its first “Bike & Ride” facility, which will provide parking for more than 100 bicycles at the College Park Metro Station. The 2,400 square-foot facility — a secure, enclosed parking structure on the first level of the station’s parking garage — is part of a plan to improve bicycle access to Metro stations, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement. By summer 2013, agency officials anticipate similar facilities will be built at Vienna and King Street stations. WMATA also has plans to expand the bike-and-ride initiative into the District of Columbia, as well as additional Maryland and Virginia stations in the next five years.
“Encouraging people to travel to Metrorail by bike helps us attract riders in a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way. We’re hoping to triple the number of people who bike to a station by 2020 and improving bicycle parking is one way to encourage area cyclists,” said WMATA Deputy General Manager Carol Kissal said.
