For the third consecutive year, more than 200 million people used the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s rail system. And Metrorail ridership increased for the 12th-straight year in FY2008.

Between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008, 215.3 million passengers rode the system, a 3.6 percent increase compared with FY2007. Weekday ridership averaged 727,684. The authority posted a monthly ridership record in June, carrying a total of 19.7 million passengers with an average of 798,456 riders per weekday. Metrorail’s previous monthly ridership record of 19 million was set in June 2007.

Meanwhile, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced that ridership on the Tri-Rail commuter-rail system increased 20.8 percent in 2008’s first half vs. the same period last year. During the year’s first six months, more than 2 million passengers boarded Tri-Rail trains.
