The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)’s contractor Kiewit will begin construction later this month of temporary bus loops in preparation for platform improvements at six stations this summer.
The bus loops will accommodate free shuttle services for WMATA passengers during construction at the Huntington, Van Dorn Street, Braddock Road and Eisenhower Avenue stations, according to a WMATA press release.
As a result of the shuttle service, the Kiss-and-Ride lots at these stations will be closed until the the project's completion later this year and existing bus stops will be temporarily relocated.
In addition, Kiewit will conduct pre-construction activities May 4-5 requiring the closure of all six stations south of Reagan National Airport. The staging is necessary to begin around-the-clock construction on May 25, WMATA officials said. Shuttle buses will replace Yellow and Blue line trains during the closure.
The platform improvement project calls for rebuilding outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations. Site preparation work is underway, including fencing, staging of construction equipment, testing and hazard mitigation.
