Rail News: Passenger Rail
A Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) board committee recently approved a proposal that would allow retailers to set up shop in 12 Metrorail stations in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Stations were chosen based on location, ridership and tourist use.
If the full board approves the proposal at its May 18 meeting, the authority would choose businesses to own, operate and manage kiosks for at least five years. The vendors would pay rent to WMATA.
Businesses could include vendors that sell magazines, newspapers, sports memorabilia and T-shirts, or provide dry cleaning or shoe repair services. Vendors would not be permitted to sell food, beverages or tobacco.
