WMATA returns newspaper recycling bins to stations
advertisement
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is taking another step toward its post-Sept. 11 normalcy by returning newspaper receptacles to all 83 Metrorail stations.
Following the attacks, WMATA removed all trash receptacles from station platforms as a security measure.
In June, the agency began installing bomb-containment trash cans in all Metrorail stations, but the newspaper recycling receptacles required modifications to prevent patrons from leaving papers on top of the receptacles.
Officials plan to install 220 recycling receptacles (two per mezzanine level) throughout the rail system by year-end.
