WMATA solicits public opinions on rail-service standards

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is soliciting public input as agency officials develop new standards for rail service.

The standards will be important in defining service quality and quantity, as well as future capital investment needs, such as increasing capacity and adding service, WMATA officials said in a blog posted yesterday on the agency’s website.

The new, formal standards will be used to guide agency officials when making major policy decisions, they said. To begin, WMATA is considering three “key” standards: hours of service, rush-hour headway and rush-hour capacity.

“Establishing the foundation for rail service standards now will allow us to add more quality standards in the future,” agency officials stated in the blog, which asks WMATA riders to watch a video on the standard-development process and provide written comments.
