Today, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) plans to place four modernized rail cars into revenue service.

The vehicles are the first of 364 Series 2000/3000 Breda rail cars ALSTOM Transport is rehabilitating for the agency under a $382.6 million contract awarded three years ago. The rehabilitation is expected to increase the 20-year-old cars’ life span another 20 years.

So far, WMATA has delivered 40 cars to ALSTOM. All cars are expected to be rehabilitated by December 2005.
