Thanks to a cherry blossom festival and Washington Capitals hockey game, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) registered its second-highest one-day ridership total on Thursday at 877,890 trips.

Since the agency opened its rail system 34 years ago, the top five daily ridership tallies occurred on Jan. 20, 2009 (1.12 million trips); April 1, 2010 (877,890 trips); Jan. 19, 2009 (866,681 trips); July 11, 2008 (854,638 trips) and June 9, 2004 (850,636 trips).

On average, WMATA provides more than 1.2 million rail and bus trips each weekday.
