Yesterday, Jay Walder completed his first day on the job as chairman and chief executive officer of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Walder was nominated by New York Gov. David Paterson on July 14 and confirmed by the state senate on Sept. 10. His term expires on June 30, 2015.

Walder first served the MTA from 1983 to 1995, rising to executive director and chief financial officer. In 2001, he joined Transport for London, where he served as managing director for finance and development until 2006. Walder most recently was a partner in McKinsey & Co.'s London office and served as global leader of the company's infrastructure practice.

“By the end of my first 100 days at the MTA, we will produce an action plan for moving forward with concrete goals and timelines,” said Walder in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, the American Public Transportation Association yesterday announced it elected Mattie Carter chairman of the 2010 executive committee. Commissioner of the Memphis Area Transit Authority, Carter will succeed Bev Scott, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s general manager who heads the 2009 committee.

The 2010 executive committee also will include Michael Scanlon, GM and chief executive officer of the San Mateo County Transit District and Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, as first vice chair, and Nathaniel Ford Sr., executive director and CEO of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, as secretary treasurer.

The committee’s vice chairs include Joseph Giulietti, executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail, representing commuter and intercity rail; Christopher Boylan, deputy executive director of corporate affairs and communication for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, representing management and finance; Gary Thomas, president and executive director of Dallas Area Rapid Transit, representing rail transit; and Flora Castillo, a New Jersey Transit board member, representing transit board members.
