Tomorrow, construction of south Florida’s first complete ground transportation hub will begin during a ceremony to be attended by state and transportation officials.

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Ananth Prasad will join local officials and representatives from Amtrak, Miami-Dade Metrorail, Greyhound, Metrobus and Tri-Rail to launch the final component of the $2 billion Miami Intermodal Center, FDOT officials said in a prepared statement.

When completed in 2013, the Miami Central Station will provide the first-ever link between all forms of ground transportation in south Florida and will connect the Miami International Airport via the new MIA mover train, FDOT officials said.

Covering 16.5 acres, the $147 million station will be “a major transfer point between rail and bus systems for commuters and visitors alike,” they said.
