Christine Howard [AGE 27]

Business Manager
Union Pacific Railroad

Education: Creighton University, B.S. in business administration, international business

Career highlights: In college, Howard interned at the Bemis Center for Performing Arts, where she established an engagement program for artists. She joined UP's Market Development and Sales Center in 2009, and has held multiple marketing and sales positions of increasing responsibility in areas such as logistics, international intermodal and chemicals. She serves as a business manager in marketing and sales for UP's chemicals group.

Why rail? "UP is a well-known brand and there is a lot of pride and integrity in the name. I wanted to be a part of that."

Making a difference in rail transportation by ... co-founding UP's Asian Employee Resource Organization (AERO), which offers UP employees a chance to learn about Asian culture. "We, as an industry, can be better at interacting with people of different cultures, [and] I think our AERO group has helped in those interactions and also provided a more welcoming and diverse space for others."

Five-year goal: "There's a saying I heard long ago that stuck with me: 'If you're not scared in your next step, then you're not reaching high enough.' I want to grow personally and be constantly challenged. I'm not necessarily striving for a particular position, but I am looking for that next opportunity that would allow me to grow as a person."

Active in: AERO; LEAD, UP's women's initiative

Her philosophy: "Approach all situations with integrity."

Interesting facts: She was born in Suzhou China, is fluent in Mandarin, and loves "all things Swedish" due to a college semester in Stockholm.

Nominator's observation: "Christine's efforts have resulted in lasting contributions to Union Pacific Railroad. Throughout her career, she has coordinated resources for improved relationships and business opportunities. Several community organizations have benefited from her guidance as a mentor or board member." — Gail Molek, UP
