Husein Cumber

Husein Cumber [AGE 38]

Executive Vice President for Corporate Development
Florida East Coast Industries Inc.

Husein Cumber's plate couldn't be more full. As executive VP for corporate development, he's responsible for Florida East Coast Industries Inc.'s (FECI) major capital infrastructure initiatives, taking them from the concept stage all the way through development.

Among his primary duties at the moment: providing strategic direction for All Aboard Florida, a privately owned intercity passenger-rail service proposed for the Florida East Coast corridor between south and central Florida.

Prior to his current job, Cumber held a similar position at FECI's affiliate Florida East Coast Railway, where he marshaled the reconnection of the freight-rail line to the Port of Miami, as well as the creation of a new intermodal container transfer facility at Port Everglades. Both projects are part of the transportation industry's preparations for the super-sized cargo ships that will enter Florida ports after the Panama Canal expansion wraps up in 2015.

Cumber also has served as president of a consulting firm that provided expertise in rail, transit and highway projects; and was deputy chief of staff and assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation during President George W. Bush's administration.

Cumber's inspiration?

"I'm driven by watching people that have significant success in their professional life, but at the same time have been able to balance it with family."

His five-year career plan?

"With a young family and an intense focus on the projects FECI is developing, I haven't been able to keep my foot in the door when it comes to transportation policy discussions. So, in the next five years, I see myself re-engaging in public-policy debates."

An interesting fact about him?

"I don't think many people know I was pre-med in college or have a degree in U.S. national security."

His favorite after-work activity?

Traveling to fun places with family.

If not in railroading, he would be ...

"Probably just getting out of a medical residency program."
